Following an early childhood fascinated with construction and pyrotechnics, James Vaughan studied ceramics and design graduating from City Art Institute, Sydney in 1985, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts - Education.
Vaughan works out of his Tasmanian based studio to produce one-off pieces for exhibition, work on commission and original homewares.
A playful mix of architectural form, set design and transformer toys, Vaughan's sculptural furniture pieces delight and inspire, reflecting the energy and contrast of Australia's wild and industrial landscapes.
Vaughan sources the finest examples of timbers and veneers and many of his works also incorporate recycled materials and curious industrial cast-offs. Fixtures are hand turned, fashioned from brass or steel. Jigs and specialised tools are often custom-made by Vaughan to achieve a desired detail.
